For those who use a septic system, you have to follow a fine process to keep the system running properly. Problems with this process can lead to major repair costs in many cases.
At Rapid Repair Experts, we’re here to help with this and other plumbing repair services. One common bit of confusion when it comes to the septic system is whether a garbage disposal can be used along with a septic system – most garbage disposal manufacturers will tell you yes, but are they being truthful or just trying to sell product? Let’s take a look.
Is it Okay?
No, using a garbage disposal along with your septic system is not okay.
In general terms, the septic system is a large tank that’s filled with water as well as the waste from your home. Over time, solid waste settles to the bottom, where bacteria start breaking it down. From here, the water waste layer allows excess liquid to exit into the drain field. At the top, finally, there’s an expected layer of scum.
To prevent the septic system from having issues, you’ll be advised to never flush certain things down waste drains, such as wipes. Adding items to the septic tank that aren’t supposed to be there can cause issues.
When you use a garbage disposal for your septic system, you’re introducing fats, grease and other waste from the disposal. The tank is not meant for this kind of waste, and much of this waste will never have a chance to break down in that environment. You’ll have to pump your tank over twice as often, and you may even have to have the entire system dug up eventually.
Luckily, there’s a simple alternative here: A compost. Composting, or vermicomposting, turns food waste into productive materials that benefit the landscape and your own garden. Some gardeners absolutely swear by compost as the best fertilizer there is. There are simple composting systems out there, many of which also allow you to compost things like paper, leaves and grass clippings to benefit the garden even further.
